Rapidly establishing himself as the guitarist everyone wants in their band, Belfast-born Simon McBride will tour with Don Airey in March and with heavy blues-rockers Snakecharmer in May.

This will be McBride’s third tour with Deep Purple keyboardist Airey’s band. He also played alongside Airey in the Ian Gillan “sings Deep Purple” tour of eastern Europe and Russia during November 2016. Simon recently completed recording for a new Airey album release and can be heard on Airey’s 2014 album Keyed Up.

The month of May will mark McBride’s first tour with Snakecharmer, the band created by former Whitesnake members Micky Moody and Neil Murray. McBride replaces Moody. Simon can also be heard on the upcoming Snakecharmer album release.

Between those outings he will take his own band to the Nevis Blues festival in the Caribbean and HRH Blues Festival in Sheffield. Early 2018 should see a new Simon McBride Band album release.

After a hugely successful 25th anniversary tour with his band, Ian Siegal moves into 2017 in a gentler fashion with a 9-date solo acoustic tour of the UK starting March 17.

Among his swelling collection of awards the most recent are for his acoustic work. His 2016 British Blues Award for Best Acoustic Artist (his third) saw him elevated to the Hall of Fame for a second time; and his Best Acoustic Artist nomination in the US Blues Music Awards brought him his third nomination in these “Grammys” of the blues – an unprecedented tally for a British artist.

The venues for this solo tour are mostly intimate club-type settings (Siegal’s preference) where his interaction with the audience comes into its own. In London he will play two shows: one at The Green Note in Camden (already sold out) and four days later on 25 March at the Bulls Head in Barnes.

A visit to Nottingham (22 March) sees him reunited with The Running Horse, the legendary pub venue on Alfreton Road recently reopened as a dedicated music venue. It was here in the nineties, when resident in Nottingham, that Siegal developed a following before touring in 2003-04 with Bill Wyman and launching his recording career in 2005.

Mar 17 Belfast: Enler Delta Blues Club
Mar 18 Liverpool: Philharmonic Music Room
Mar 19 Sheffield: Greystones
Mar 20 Southampton: Platform Tavern
Mar 21 London (Camden): Green Note
Mar 22 Nottingham: Running Horse
Mar 23 Poynton: Blue Funk
Mar 24 Bury: The Met
Mar 25 London (Barnes): Bull’s Head

Soon after this tour he heads to the Caribbean with his band for the Nevis Blues Festival (7 & 8 April). He plans to record a new album during the summer.

Ian was also nominated in the acoustic Artist category of the 2016 US Blues Music Awards, his third nomination in these “Grammys of the Blues” and an unprecedented nod to a non-American artist.

His recent acoustic albums are: Wayward Sons, a concert recording with Jimbo Mathus; The Picnic Sessions, a campfire-style collaboration with the Dickinson brothers of North Mississippi Allstars fame, Alvin Youngblood Hart and Jimbo Mathus; and Man & Guitar, a BBC recording at The Albert Hall.

21-track live album of Ian Siegal and Jimbo Mathus

Wayward Sons is an evocative snapshot of a special night of dry banter, salty tales and classic songs performed with industrial-strength charisma by two artistes at the top of their game. This atmospheric album places the listener squarely in the midst of the crowd as they cheer the Anglo-American duo through a diverse set of self-penned songs and classics from the book of Americana.

In the autumn of 2014 on their first tour together, Ian Siegal and Jimbo Mathus rolled into the sleepy Dutch town of Hoogland. They pitched camp at Café De Noot, which despite its parochial name has been hosting international touring artistes for more than 20 years. What followed was a special night. The set might so easily have been lost into folklore, kept alive only in the memories of the fans that packed the venue. Thankfully, somebody thought to hit ‘record.’

Even in the age of auto-tune and Pro Tools, you can’t fake chemistry – and Wayward Sons proves the Siegal/Mathus partnership has it in spades. The pair’s friendship goes back to 2013, when Mathus contributed banjo and mandolin to Siegal’s acclaimed album, The Picnic Sessions, recorded in Mississippi. Despite hailing from opposite sides of the Atlantic, the two men found they shared cultural touchstones, not to mention a rare musical understanding that bleeds into Wayward Sons. Siegal’s acoustic and slide guitar dovetails with Mathus’ mandolin, harmonica and kazoo. Vocal harmonies lock horns.

This standout show from their first tour together also finds the duo’s banter on whip-cracking form, whether that’s Siegal claiming to be the mayor of Hoogland, or Mathus wryly reminding us that he’s still very much alive. Siegal and Mathus are undeniably stellar live musicians, racing through a set list that airs a fistful of classics from their respective catalogues, as well as some rip-it-up reboots of old standards.

Of the 21 tracks, five are introductions to various songs and are both informative and funny, and in some cases running to nearly two minutes hence the separate track listing.

The album is only available on CD either directly from Nugene or from leading online and street-level stores.

Ian Siegal and Jimbo Mathus will play some 40 shows across Europe in the period 22 April to 4 June 2016. This follows their successful first tour together in 2014. Ahead of touring the duo are releasing a 21-track album recorded during the debut tour.

For devotees of blues and Americana on this side of the Atlantic, Ian Siegal needs no introduction. He’s the eight-times British Blues Awards winner, three-times European Blues Awards winner, and three-times US Blues Music Awards nominee. He’s sung with the prestigious Orchestre National de Jazz in Paris, played in more than 40 countries, and among his latest albums is a BBC recording made at London’s Royal Albert Hall. His accolades include two from MOJO magazine for Best Blues Album of the Year. Ian is the only non-American to achieve this distinction.

He first met Jimbo in 2013 when the latter contributed banjo and mandolin parts to an album Ian was recording in Mississippi (The Picnic Sessions). The two discovered a shared passion for many of the same musical influences.

Now, when someone has found fame with a band called Squirrel Nut Zippers (as Jimbo Mathus did when he formed this alt-Americana outfit), you know you’re in for something different! An almost overnight sensation, The Zippers played at the second inauguration of President Bill Clinton and the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta. Later Mathus went on to pursue a variety of musical projects. Among these he toured and recorded with Buddy Guy (catalyzing the distinct approach of Guy’s “Sweet Tea” album) and he is a founding member of the South Memphis String Band. Jimbo has a new album “Blue Healer” on the Fat Possum record label.

When nominations for the 2016 Blues Music Awards were announced by the Memphis-based Blues Foundation, Ian Siegal’s name was once again lit large, this time for Acoustic Artist of the Year. Ian was previously nominated in 2013 and 2012 in the Contemporary Album category. He now ranks as the most nominated British artiste of all-time in the Blues Music Awards.

This capped a year (2015) in which his two album releases – one acoustic (The Picnic Sessions) and one with his band (One Night in Amsterdam) – have received outstanding reviews. Earlier this year he was awarded Acoustic Artist of the Year in The British Blues Awards and Male Artist of the Year in the European Blues Awards, bringing his tally of British and European awards to eleven.

“A wonderful showcase for the gem of the British blues scene…. Beautiful songwriting…. both powerful and poetic. The musicianship is exemplary. Superb.” THE BLUES MAGAZINE 9/10

One Night in Amsterdam marks Ian Siegal’s first live album with a full-throttle electric band. It also marks the first time he has performed, let alone recorded, four of the songs on this album. There are re-workings of several all-time fan favourites, excursions into the distant past, and some surprises.

The band is Siegal’s relatively new (launched in 2013) Dutch-German contingent and his first band change in ten years. With an average age of 23, Dusty Ciggaar (guitar), Raphael Schwiddessen (drums), and Danny Van’t Hoff (bass), deliver in spades, as though they have been playing with Siegal for as long as they are old. Young Dusty Ciggaar, already well known on the Benelux scene, confirms his status as a guitar god in waiting. It’s fair to say that these guys are amongst the few musicians able to keep pace with Siegal’s freewheeling live performances.

One Night In Amsterdam is the sound of chemistry but the songs are always the stars. Before the crowd’s welcoming cheers have even subsided, I Am The Train races out of the blocks, even more urgent here than when Siegal tracked it in Mississippi for his 2012 album, Candy Store Kid. And then the show builds and builds…..

One night. A thousand highlights! Plus, don’t miss the extended free bonus track Hard Pressed – unlocked via a download key with every copy of One Night in Amsterdam.

Also from Candy Store Kid comes the sad-eyed, slide-powered travelogue of Early Grace, Siegal’s raw vocal exposing the tarnish on the Golden State (“California, where all your dreams come true, your nightmares too”).

Elsewhere, he pulls out the funk-blues strut of Kingdom Come (from 2009’s Broadside), with its tough vocal telling of a woman with “the wings of an angel and the eyes of a shark”. He revisits the evergreen Brandy Balloon (from 2005’s Meat & Potatoes), and even dusts off Queen Of The Junior Prom (the pick of 2002 debut Standing In The Morning), with the crowd reaction suggesting that Siegal’s earliest fans have never left his side.

In Siegal’s hands, the old is every bit as thrilling as the new, and even dog-eared cover versions can feel like they’re being born right in front of you. At this North Sea Jazz Club show, the songwriter shows his scholarly appreciation of the masters, whether re-imagining Tom Russell’s classic cockfighting fable, Gallo Del Cielo, or revisiting his own back-pages in Nottingham, England, where local legend Harry Stephenson entranced the crowds. “I just really wanted to do one of Harry’s songs,” explains Siegal, before launching into Stephenson’s gutsy rocker, Writing On The Wall.

For the final two tracks Ian is joined by siblings, Joel and Tess Gaerthe, from the popular Dutch indie band, Ashtraynutz. They add magical harmonies to the Everly Brothers’ Love Hurts and another first performance, Please Don’t Fail Me.

One night. A thousand highlights! Plus, don’t miss the extended free bonus track Hard Pressed – unlocked via a download key with every copy of One Night in Amsterdam.

Description

“The strength and feel of Siegal’s voice shows just how effectively and legitimately he can inhabit the vocal traditions of Mississippi.” The Blues magazine

The Picnic Sessions is an uncut diamond, the perfect expression of what happens when five talented musicians with a love of Blues & roots Americana get together and play and sing, with no predetermined idea of the outcome. You can hear the relaxed enjoyment and spontaneity as they swap instrumental roles, add harmonies and contribute ideas. It’s a “back porch” session without the porch!

Ian Siegal explains:

“In June 2013 I went to the North Mississippi Hill Country Picnic, a festival near the town of Oxford MS and home turf for the Dickinson brothers and Alvin Youngblood Hart, my cohorts in the Mississippi Mudbloods. It’s also local to Jimbo Mathus, who I had long wanted to meet. Everyone was free the next day and up for a jam, so we piled into the Dickinson’s Zebra Ranch studio, sat in a semi-circle, campfire-style around some old ribbon microphones, and played and sang. It was a case of turn on the old tape machine and see what happens.

“Having recorded two albums with Cody Dickinson as producer (The Skinny and Candy Store Kid), I was excited to have Cody available to contribute his ideas and stop total anarchy taking over! We had a blast and recorded ten songs in the space of 2 leisurely afternoon sessions.
“This, very definitely, is old school. There are no concessions to modern technology; and there was not a lot of planning either. Everyone simply grabbed the nearest instrument and played, so you can hear guitars, mandolin, mandocello, and banjo among the various instruments used.

“There are songs of mine I haven’t played in years, some traditional covers, and a few new songs I wrote on the way to the festival (with some on-the-spot re-writes in the studio). There’s something liberating about recording casually without the pressure of having to produce an album. So don’t expect perfection, it’s more to do with the vibe, which you can gather from some of the banter that ensued between songs. We had a blast, like kids let out of class!”

Note: the CD of this album contains six tracks of conversation and out-takes which are not sampled here.
