Ian Siegal
"You should be very proud to have this young man in your own country. You have someone right here who can really sing the Deep Blues. He got church in his voice. If my Daddy was alive today he'd say ‘That's my Boy!’" - Big Bill Morganfield (Muddy Waters’ son)Born in the deep south (of England!) in 1971, Ian's earliest musical memories are of the likes of Buddy Holly, Jerry Lee Lewis, Elvis and Chuck Berry, but it was on hearing the great Little Richard that he really caught the music bug and became nothing short of obsessive about it. This lead him into a life-long passion for the Blues and all of its various branches, and most of all, the man he calls "God" - the inimitable Muddy Waters.
At 16 he began to roadie occasionally for his cousin's band and one night, quite unexpectedly, he was asked to sing. The result was a blown-away audience and a delighted (and rather surprised!) young vocal talent with a long career ahead of him.
It was 2 years later that he picked up a guitar and taught himself to play, listening to the likes of Muddy, B.B King, Robert Cray and Albert Collins. At 20 he dropped out of Art college and travelled to Berlin, busking for a living. This is where he says his playing dramatically improved as, if he didn't make money, he didn't eat! By the time he returned to England he knew that a career in music was the only one for him.
A visit to Nottingham resulted in a 5 year stay and Ian's first band became one of the most popular on the local music scene, with a residency at renowned venue The Running Horse attracting full houses and appearances at Colne and Burnley festivals getting rave reviews. His first album "Picture Postcards" also showed Ian to be a gifted songwriter with a deep understanding of musical traditions, but with an eye on the future.
Moving to London to further his career was inevitable and Ian became an established part of the London Blues community almost immediately. That’s where today’s Ian Siegal band was born.
Many gigs followed, along with a number of appearances with American Blues acts - Phil Guy, Sugar Blue, Nappy Brown, Eddie Kirkland, Catfish Keith and Jimmie Vaughan to name but few. He has also sung with other bands, notably The Lee Sankey Group and can be heard on the album "Tell Me There's a Sun".
All the time Siegal's writing and playing skills developed, and appearances on larger festival stages to bigger audiences - such as Edinburgh, Lugano, Peer, North Sea Jazz - enabled him to hone his skills into becoming one of the most naturally exciting and vibrant talents on the scene today.
Two successive European tours (2003/4) opening for ex-Rolling Stone Bill Wyman's Rhythm Kings brought him to the attention of a wider audience. Wyman also invited Ian to record with the Rhythm Kings. This was followed by UK tours as a duo with Big Bill Morganfield (son of Muddy Waters). During this time Siegal was also capturing the hearts of audiences in Holland, Belgium, Austria and Hungary. In 2005 he topped the Soul/Blues/Jazz charts in Holland and in 2006 he debuted in the USA, appearing at the Waterfront Festival, the largest music festival on the West Coast.
His 2005 album Meat & Potatoes has been universally praised and gained a maximum four star (excellent) rating in the Penguin Book of Blues Recordings – Ian is one of only two living British Blues artists to gain this distinction. Meat & Potatoes has since been re-released as a double disc pack together with a DVD of his stunning performance at the North Sea Jazz Festival, where he played the main stage as one of three UK artists (the others being Jamie Cullum and Joss Stone).
That was followed by Swagger his 2007 release, which again received universal praise, "No less of a testament to the talents of one of the most innovative, gifted and engaging blues performers on the planet today." MOJO magazine ranked Swagger as their no.2 Blues album of 2007.
Siegal is equally accomplished solo as he is fronting his band. In response to fans requests for an acoustic album The Dust was released at the end of 2008. A collection of new songs and some old favourites (with noted pedal steel guitarist B.J.Cole appearing on a few tracks), the CD quickly entered HMV's roots chart, and again made No.2 in MOJO magazine's Blues album chart – this time for 2008.
His latest album, Broadside, sees Ian in an expansive mood, mixing his blues with other genres to create a multi-faceted collection of songs that represent probably his most exciting and commercial work to date.
In a new twist to his career, Ian has been performing with France's elite young musicians in the Orchestre National de Jazz in a program of Billie Holiday songs entitled "Broadway in Satin." Backed by a 12 piece orchestra Ian has performed with the ONJ at major festivals across France.
"A rare combination of cleverness and craft."**** (Excellent) PENGUIN BOOK OF BLUES RECORDINGS "Siegal is the cleverest writer and most magnetic performer of blues in the UK."MOJO "My man! We're from the same school" - Ronnie Wood "I love the voice and there's a lotta soul in that guitar" - Albert Lee "The Real Deal" - Eddie Floyd "So Down-Home!" - Sugar Blue
